According to beliefs, the temple was established around 2000–2400 years ago by Adi Guru Shankaracharya.
Uniqueness
Within the temple premises, there is a sacred pond. Devotees believe that the water, said to be from the bathing of the Goddess, has healing properties and cures ailments simply by using it.
The temple houses a special idol made of Ashtadhatu (a mixture of eight metals). This idol is taken out for public viewing only on Ashtami and Navami during Navratri. Devotees strongly believe that wishes made on these days are fulfilled.
Legends say that during an invasion, the priest hid the idol of Goddess Kali inside a well to protect it. When it was later retrieved, the idol appeared not only in Kali’s form but also in the form of Lakshmi-Narayan. Since then, both forms are worshipped together.
40-Day Devotion
As per local tradition, if a devotee continuously worships the Goddess for 40 days, their wishes are granted.

Cultural Importance of Chowk
The temple is not only a spiritual center but also an important cultural heritage site of Lucknow. Recently, new infrastructure such as a Satsang Bhawan and Yoga Center were inaugurated to promote pilgrimage and tourism.
The Mandir is considered as one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Lucknow. Located in the Ghasyari Mandi area, and considered as 2500 Years old temple, the temple receives a large footfall of devotees every day.

Appointment of Swami Vivekanand Giri Ji
as President / Mahant
From July 31, 2022, Mahant Triveni Giri—under the authority of the Bodh Gaya Math—assumed control of the Lucknow branch of the Bodh Gaya Math, which includes the Badi Kali Ji Temple. He subsequently appointed Swami Vivekanand Giri as his representative to manage the temple's affairs.
