About the Temple

History and Origin

Shri Badi Kali Ji Temple, located in Chowk, Lucknow, is one of the oldest Siddha Peeth temples of the world. The temple is believed to have a history of nearly 2,500 years. It is said that the temple was established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. Here, MaaMahakali is worshipped in the divine forms of Lord Vishnu and Maa Lakshmi.

The idol of Maa Kali enshrined here is considered Swayambhu (self-manifested) and is believed to possess immense divine powers. According to local traditions, when Lucknow was expanding as a city, this site emerged as a prominent seat of spiritual practice and devotion. Over time, devotees and saints began gathering here, and the temple became a major center of Shakti worship.

With the passage of time, the temple grew in prominence and grandeur. Today, it is counted among the most significant shrines dedicated to Goddess Kali, not only in Lucknow but across North India. During Navratri and Kali Puja, the temple attracts thousands of devotees, and grand festivities and fairs are organized to celebrate the divine presence of Maa Kali.
